Brake Warning Signs
Brake Warning Lights
A brake warning light will activate if your emergency brake is on or if your Toyota vehicle has a serious drop in the system's hydraulic pressure. If it is the latter, bring your car into Ourisman Fairfax Toyota ASAP as your brakes could be near total failure.
Low or "Spongy" Brake Pedal
Does your brake pedal nearly touch your Toyota car's floorboard before the brakes start working, or does your brake pedal feel "spongy?" This problem could require a simple adjustment or it may be something much more serious. Your brake warning light may or may not come on when you push the brake pedal.
Touchy brakes, those that grab and stop with very little pedal pressure, could indicate a simple problem, like a contaminated brake lining, but could also be a very serious issue. Visit our Fairfax brake service center to make sure you are safe driving your Toyota automobile.
Does your car pull to one side when you apply the brakes? This could be caused by anything from an underinflated tire to misadjusted brakes and indicates a need for repair.
Brakes should operate with very little noise. A little noise is normal, but excessive squealing, screeching, grinding, groaning, chatter, clatter or bang means your Toyota's brakes need attention.
Vibration when Braking
Does your brake pedal, steering wheel, or vehicle shake, vibrate, or pulsate when you apply the brakes? This could mean that you need to resurface the disc brake rotors, or it is signaling a serious problem involving a loose brake system component or faulty steering mechanism. Ourisman Fairfax Toyota can help you tell the difference.
If you are experiencing any of the conditions above, you are probably also experiencing longer stopping distances and having a difficult time stopping if you have to slam on the brakes in your Toyota vehicle. Any time you notice any of the symptoms on this list, it is a very good idea to have your brakes checked by a brake specialist. Ourisman Fairfax Toyota recommends that you have them inspected at least once a year even if you do not experience any negative symptoms.
