All-new subcompact crossover offers Washington DC and Arlington, VA, drivers an intriguing middle ground between C-HR and RAV4

The Toyota Corolla has been in continuous production for more than half a century, boasting one of the longest uninterrupted runs in the industry. In that timeframe, the nameplate's reputation for reliability, efficiency, and value has made it the best-selling nameplate worldwide in history. This year Toyota is further evolving the Corolla brand into the utility vehicle space with the all-new 2022 Corolla Cross, building on a proven foundation to offer customers more versatility and capability.

Toyota is preparing to launch the 2022 Corolla Cross sometime in Fall-Winter of 2021, with trim levels including L, LE, and XLE. Par for the course of pending arrivals, full specs and details aren't yet available. But Toyota has provided enough information for potential customers to get excited about. In this blog, we'll provide an overview of what we know so far. And we'll be sure to keep you updated as more data is released.

2022 Corolla Cross Performance and Dimensions

Though technically classified as a subcompact crossover, in practicality, the 2022 Corolla Cross slots between the subcompact and compact segments, with dimensions smaller than the Toyota RAV4 but larger than the Toyota C-HR. This allows the Corolla Cross to provide roomy passenger accommodations and cargo capacity while maintaining a highly maneuverable city-friendly physical footprint. In addition, the Corolla Cross will also offer available capability-expanding accessories like a roof rack with crossbars, an activity mount for items like bicycles, and all-weather formats.

Under the hood, the Corolla Cross is motivated by a responsive and efficient 2.0-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder. Sending 169 horsepower to the front wheels is a Direct Shift continuously variable transmission, which includes a physical first gear for a more engaging driving experience and helps the Corolla Cross achieve an estimated 32 mpg combined. And for enhanced handling and control, all-wheel-drive will be available as an option.

AWD models will also feature a fully independent rear suspension and implement Toyota's clever Dynamic Torque Control system, which can apportion up to 50% power to the rear wheels when needed and disengage completely when not. This intelligent power distribution enables AWD models to maintain a strong efficiency rating of 30 mpg combined.

2022 Corolla Cross Design and Accommodations

Built on the TNGA-C platform, the Corolla Cross allows for easier approachability and entry and gives drivers a higher line of sight when behind the wheel. On the outside, a distinctive black grille and dynamic headlight clusters, and chiseled fenders create a noticeably assertive front fascia that pairs perfectly with the entry SUV's confident, broad-shouldered stance.

On the inside, the Corolla Cross shares attributes with its sedan and hatchback brethren, offering available seating enhancements like SofTex upholstery, heated front seats, a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and single- or available dual-zone automatic climate control. Even better, all models will come standard with rear heating and cooling vents, providing faster temperature adjustments for second-row passengers. Furthermore, 60/40-split rear seat folds easily to expand cargo capacity and includes a center armrest with cupholders on XLE models.

2022 Corolla Cross Technology

The Corolla Cross will make it easy to stay connected and entertained on the go, thanks to its standard 7-inch or available 8-inch multimedia touchscreen. Additionally, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allow for seamless smartphone integration, providing intuitive access to useful apps and features like hands-free calls and messaging, streaming and stored media, Google and Apple Maps, traffic and weather information, and much more.

Vienna drivers will be able to enhance their road trip playlists with the available Audio Plus multimedia with Remote Connect and a nine-speaker JBL premium audio system. Additionally, customers will be able to option a 7-inch digital Multi-Information Display instrument cluster, which is customizable to the driver's preference.

2022 Corolla Cross Safety Features

There's no substitute for attentive driving when it comes to ensuring safe arrival. Still, it's always nice to have some assistance. Like all Toyota models, the Corolla Cross will feature Toyota Safety Sense advanced driver aids to enhance driver awareness, help avoid hazards, and improve driving convenience. Standard driver-assistance technologies include:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Road Sign Assist

The Corolla Cross LE will also come standard with Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, while XLE models will include Front and Rear Parking Assist and Rear Automatic Braking.
